One of the most exciting ways to experience this is by spending a night in a luxury African safari sleepout, such as a treehouse or star bed on a raised platform. These unique accommodations are wonderfully comfortable, and many feature four-poster beds, soft linens, and lantern-lit settings.
Why spending a night on a sleepout deck or treehouse is a must for your African safari
Treehouses evoke a childlike sense of adventure and wonder while offering privacy and a touch of romance. Exclusive sleepouts are ideal for couples, but certain private safari lodges even accommodate small families. Whether tucked into a dense forest or positioned on a desert plain, each sleepout experience is different. Many of these are standalone treehouse lodges, while others offer the option of a separate sleepout deck connected to your room. Below are some of my favourite treehouses and star beds across Africa to inspire your next wildlife safari adventure.
Our expert pick of the top safari lodges and camps in Africa with treehouses or sleepouts
Kanana Treehouse, Okavango Delta, Botswana
Set on a floodplain in Botswana’s iconic Okavango Delta, Kanana Camp offers the perfect blend of adventure and tranquillity. Days are filled with game drives, mokoro (canoe) safaris, and guided bush walks, while the treehouse sleepout promises an unforgettable night in nature. Perched on a raised platform in an open grassy floodplain, this treehouse features a beautifully netted double four-poster bed surrounded by lanterns.
As you drift off to sleep, you’ll be serenaded by the sounds of painted reed frogs, snorting hippos, and perhaps even the rasping call of a leopard nearby. The luxury sleepout is a short drive from the main camp, providing complete solitude in a truly wild setting.

Chisa Camp in Zambia’s Busanga Plains, part of Kafue National Park, is an eco-friendly, conservation-focused luxury travel destination offering a unique “Silent Safari” experience with electric safari vehicles, boats, and bikes. The camp’s four elevated bird’s nest-style pods provide breathtaking sunrise views over the vast plains. Built high above the floodplain, these pods are designed to blend into the landscape while offering panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness.
At dawn, you’ll wake to the sight of the sun creeping across the horizon, illuminating a landscape teeming with wildlife. The peaceful atmosphere and minimal human presence make for an incredibly intimate wildlife safari experience.
Kingston Treehouse, Lion Sands Ivory Lodge, Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa
Located in the heart of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Lion Sands offers some of the best Big Five wildlife viewing in South Africa. The Kingston Treehouse is accessible via a private drawbridge and is surrounded by stunning wilderness. After a private dinner on the open deck, you’ll fall asleep under the stars, listening to the sounds of nature – a lion’s distant roar is captivating!
Luxuriously appointed with an en suite bathroom enclosed by glass, the treehouse offers all the comforts of a boutique hotel, but with a front-row seat to the African bush. The entire landscape glows silver at full moon, making the experience even more enchanting.
Ngaga Camp, Odzala National Park, Republic of Congo
Deep in the Republic of Congo’s rainforest of Odzala-Kokoua National Park, Lango Camp’s treehouses offer an immersive jungle experience. Built on stilts with raised walkways between rooms, these treehouses blend seamlessly into the forest. Constructed using local materials in a beehive style, they provide a perfect vantage point for listening to the myriad sounds of the forest at night.
Odzala is home to western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, and an astonishing variety of bird species. By day, you can track two family groups of gorillas with expert guides on a gorilla safari, while evenings are filled with the calls of De Brazza’s monkeys and crowned monkeys, creating an unforgettable experience in one of Africa’s last great rainforests.
Sarara Treehouses, Matthews Range, Kenya
Located deep in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya’s Matthews Range, the Sarara Treehouses offer spectacular views of mountains and valleys. The conservancy is also home to the Samburu tribes, thousands of elephants and a thriving leopard population.
During the day, guests can explore walking trails, visit the local Samburu communities, and relax by the rock swimming pool. Evenings are spent in treetop-tented rooms, falling asleep to the rustle of leaves and the early morning chorus of birds. It’s a truly immersive experience, blending adventure, culture, and wildlife safaris in Africa.
Linkwasha Star Bed, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
In the heart of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, Linkwasha Camp’s star bed overlooks Scott’s Pan, a waterhole frequented by elephants and other wildlife. The camp itself is renowned for its exceptional guiding and abundant wildlife. It is famed for its great herds of elephants, few camps and visitors, as well as having the most exceptional guides in Africa.
Here you can take game drives both day and night to see nocturnal species, do safari walks with your expert guides to see all the minutia such as plants and insects, and view the wildlife at the Pan from the hide. On your sleepout night, you’ll be driven out into the wilderness to spend the night on a raised deck, surrounded by the sounds of the African bush. When I stayed there, I was surrounded by over 150 elephants—watching them drink and splash in the water below was an experience I’ll never forget.

Dinaka Sleepout Deck, Kalahari Desert, Botswana
Tucked away on the edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Dinaka Camp offers an intimate and authentic luxury African safari experience in one of Southern Africa’s most unique and biodiverse regions. This small, personal camp is the perfect base for tracking the extraordinary wildlife that has adapted to the harsh beauty of the Kalahari Desert.
The camp’s tented rooms embody the true spirit of safari, blending rustic charm with comfort. For something even more special, the sleepout deck – elevated high on wooden stilts – provides uninterrupted 360° views across the vast short-grass plains. With no light pollution and clear, dry air, the night sky becomes a dazzling canvas of stars, offering a dazzling stargazing experience.
During the day, you’ll explore the landscape with expert guides, observe wildlife from an underground photographic bunker, and meet the local San people, who have thrived in this environment for millennia. Their stories, shared around the campfire, offer a glimpse into an ancient way of life. As night falls, retreat to the elevated deck, drifting off to sleep under a blanket of stars, surrounded by the quiet presence of oryx, springbok, and the occasional brown hyena.
