There are two very different ways to approach the archaeological wonders of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. At one end of the spectrum is what one might call the ‘tour bus’ approach–basing oneself at an all-inclusive beach resort and making day (and occasionally overnight) trips to sites such as Chichen Itza and Uxmal. This is what the overwhelming majority of visitors do, and it generally results in long travel times, large crowds, a lot of waiting around, sightseeing under the mid-day sun and often, understandably, frayed tempers. You rush through, box certainly ticked, but return exhausted, wondering what all the fuss was about.
Our approach is the polar opposite. Our recommended way to explore Yucatán and its wonderful Mayan heritage is to base yourself at one, maybe two, of the wonderful private haciendas we have on our books. Strategically dotted around the peninsula, and often just a short drive from the major Maya sites, these haciendas are magical cocoons in their own right, but perhaps just as importantly, they allow you to immerse yourself in the beauty and mystery of the Maya world on your terms.

"The haciendas are in extraordinary locations, ranging from grand plantation houses to exquisitely restored colonial mansions and spectacular jungle sanctuaries."
We’ll set you up with regional experts, including renowned archaeologists, naturalists and the Maya themselves so that you can explore the sites after hours when the temperatures are cooler, the crowds have departed, and the light is more atmospheric. And, instead of a long drive to and from the coast, you could be spending your time swimming in a private cenote, indulging in a little bird watching or learning the secrets of making cochinita pibil from a Mayan ‘nonna’. Each itinerary is tailored to your specific interests. The experience is simply world-class.
The haciendas are in extraordinary locations, ranging from grand plantation houses to exquisitely restored colonial mansions and spectacular jungle sanctuaries. Some have ancient Maya pyramids within their grounds, others come with their own cenote. Many have cloistered pools and lily ponds, or great ceiba trees under which you can dine al fresco flanked by lit torches. Each is fragrant with tantalising scents from the garden and the kitchen. There are whispers from the past everywhere. The staff are incredibly well trained–smiling, caring, attentive but know how to melt into the background too.
Casa Palomeque
Come with your family and you’ll experience a profound relaxation and happiness as you reconnect with your children and tune in to the real you. Come with a partner, and romance is virtually guaranteed. A private rainforest spa? No problem. Bikes delivered and a picnic prepared so you can go off exploring? Absolutely.
Experiencing the Mayan world while staying at a private hacienda is light years away from the usual approach, and often more economical. It brings back the allure of travel in bygone days. It will rekindle your sense of wonder, foster deep-rooted peace and reconnect you with your loved ones.
