Kate Pirie
Born in Zimbabwe, Kate spent the first part of her life in Mushandike National Park then the outskirts of Hwange National Park. She moved to Botswana where her parents ran various lodges in the Okavango Delta and Kate followed suit, managing safari camps, mobile safaris and even a houseboat in the Panhandle. She has led walking safaris in Chobe and Linyanti and guided specialist groups in the Delta, including anthropologist and zoologist Lyall Watson.
Whilst all animals are favourites (except snakes!), she has a soft spot for primates and has trekked several times to see the mountain gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda, western lowland gorillas in the Republic of Congo, geladas in Ethiopia and lemurs in all parts of Madagascar. She is a tremendous birder and has a life-long interest in frogs.
Her favourite experiences include staying in the Namib Desert in Namibia with its dramatic colours and landscapes, watching gorillas in Odzala in Congo, catching a glimpse of the endangered Ethiopian wolves in the Bale Mountains in Ethiopia, walking in the South Luangwa in Zambia, and gliding by mokoro through the channels of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
