Located in the mountainous northwest of Yunnan lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Three Parallel Rivers area, designated as such due to its breathtaking diversity of landscapes. Here you’ll find dramatic scenery from alpine karst and glaciers to sandstone landforms, lakes and flower-filled meadows. Given the changes in altitude, you might experience four seasons in a day as you descend from the snowy mountains that peak at over 3.73 miles (6000m) high to the warmer valleys and terraced rice fields. The scenery is dominated by the mighty Yangtze, Mekong and Salween rivers, whilst the Meili, Baima and Haba Snow Mountains offer phenomenal skyline views. This trip is ideal for adventurous travellers looking for a combination of wildlife, local culture and hiking off-the-beaten path.
This peaceful kingdom offers access to a variety of different ethnic minority tribes who have preserved the area for generations and provides a glimpse of Tibetan Buddhist culture. Learn about the area’s fascinating heritage by visiting local Tibetan, Naxi and Lisu families and exploring Tibetan monasteries such as Dongzhulin Monastery in Benzilan and the colourful Songzanlin Monastery in Shangri-La. Or visit the Dharma Cave, a holy place for pilgrimage which provides fascinating insight into the living heritage of Yunnan.
The rich biodiversity you’ll discover here offers a fertile environment for wildlife and flora and fauna to thrive.
