Often referred to as one of the last hidden paradises on earth, the relatively undiscovered Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar consists of 800 islands located off the southernmost tip of the country in the balmy waters of the Andaman Sea. The Mergui Archipelago boasts most of Myanmar’s coral reef and offers tropical terrain from evergreen forests to seagrass meadows in its richly diverse ecological system. It is here in the Lampi Marine National Park that the first privately-owned luxury eco-resort was developed on the 5,000-acre island of Wa Ale, within one of the finest marine conservation areas in Asia.
The development of the resort focused on creating minimal impact on the natural environment, whilst creating a secluded sanctuary that epitomises luxury and comfort. Given the fragility of the ecosystem, the founders of Wa Ale Island Resort created the Lampi Foundation which works closely with the Myanmar government on conservation projects including Sea Turtle Conservation and Coral Protection.
The wildlife here is simply extraordinary – around 20 mammal species from monkeys to slow loris and the rare Sunda pangolin. Spot some of the 200 bird species that are also resident on the island, from plain-pouched hornbills to Wallace’s hawk eagles. Underwater you’ll discover a kingdom of spectacular marine life. Snorkel along the beach shallows to find sea turtles and manta rays gliding by, or dive into the turquoise waters with experienced experts to spot whale sharks and dolphins amongst the array of tropical fish.
