For centuries, travellers have been drawn to explore the heart of the ancient Khmer Empire across Southeast Asia. The magnificent temples of Preah Vihear, Koh Ker and Preah Khan Kompong Svay in the Dongrek Mountains of Cambodia come alive during our private helicopter ride to some of the country’s most significant heritage sites, followed by an overnight stay in a luxury tented camp.
Highlights of a Private Helicopter tour of the Khmer Empire
"As the helicopter comes into land, savour breathtaking views as the temple appears to dangle precariously on the cliff edge due to its position on the sloping mountain plateau."
Beginning with the visual spectacle of Preah Vihear situated 525 metres high on the clifftop of Pey Tadi, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for the beauty of its architecture. Formerly a prestigious provincial sanctuary, it played an important role throughout the Angkorian empire with Khmer rulers expanding and embellishing the site to showcase their power.
As the helicopter comes into land, savour breathtaking views as the temple appears to dangle precariously on the cliff edge due to its position on the sloping mountain plateau. Preah Vihear’s five Gopuram buildings are built on different levels, leading to the main sanctuary at the highest point. You’ll learn fascinating facts and hear stories from this historic bygone era whilst exploring the temple’s sacred monuments with your expert guide.
Your helicopter journey continues across the lush million-acre wildlife refuge of Kulen Prum Tep Sanctuary to Koh Ker, Cambodia’s second-largest temple town. Also known as the “capital of a forgotten empire,” it contains the remnants of more than 180 temples in an area of over 8,000 hectares. Spot the distinctive pyramid-shaped tower of Prasat Thom that visibly protrudes from the forest before your helicopter descends from the sky to indulge in a spot of light lunch before exploring the ruins.
After climbing to the top of Pyramid Prast Thom for rewarding panoramic views, we fly to Preah Khan of Kompong Svay. Rediscovered in 1983 by French explorer, Louis Delaporte, this sprawling archaeological site (found 100 kilometres from Siem Reap) is the single biggest temple complex built during the Khmer Empire. Thanks to its remote location, Preah Kahn receives less than 20 visitors per day so you can explore with your expert guide through the dense vegetation in peace, without crowds of tourists disturbing the tranquility.
Admire the spectacular views from Preah Vihear.
After a full day of exploring it’s time to relax with a glass of wine, beer or champagne as the temperatures cool at your fully-equipped luxury camping set-up. Enjoy panoramic views at sunset as the light fades and the night sky fills with stars whilst indulging in a delicious barbecue dinner.
Whether it’s the breathtaking scenery, stories of the mighty Khmer Empire or the impressive sacred temples that exist today, you’ll find the combination of aerial and land explorations a richly rewarding experience.
