Mozambique Family Safaris

perfect for families and couples alike.jpg

Mozambique is a wonderful country to explore for a family holiday. Probably the best thing to happen along the Mozambique coastline is the introduction of the five day dhow luxury safari that combines a few days camping with a few days spent on a remote island in a small luxury lodge. These are simply fabulous and just perfect for the active family.

We find many of our clients do a safari in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana or Zambia and then fly across to northern Mozambique for some more adventure and relaxing in the sun on remote secluded beaches where you are unlikely to see anyone else bar the local fishermen!

Taking the private dhow complete with skipper and crew, you then spend the first four days in outstanding natural beauty. As well as being completely wild, it is untouched and entirely uncommercial.

Spend the days sailing (which one can assist with), snorkelling, scuba diving and sea-kayaking. Here one has examples of some of the best coral anywhere.

Each night will be spent camping on a different beach. You then end up at a lovely, atmospheric and beautiful lodge for three nights where you can again scuba dive or immerse yourself in the beauty and fascinating aspects of Ibo Island.

This is an active island, where the inhabitants’ number around 3,000, yet one hardly ever sees them.

You can watch the fishermen building dhows around the boatyards and walk through the streets with the most magnificent colonial architecture, or go on a guided tour with João Baptiste, an octogenarian who, through a translator, describes life on the island during the war.

For those wanting ultra-chic lodges, we can certainly offer these, too, and they are also child-friendly. Our favourite is in the north of the island and provides the most amazing food.

In front of the lodge is a ledge where young ones can practice snorkelling and scuba diving in what seems like an aquarium – teeming with fish, lobster and coral.

If one wishes to include one of our bespoke safaris, we would also recommend combining northern Mozambique with southern Tanzania for the luxury safari experience.

We also have some wonderful canoeing trips in the Niassa region in northern Mozambique for the older, teenage family.

Highlights of a family holiday to Mozambique:

  • Without doubt, the 5-day dhow luxury safari along the Quirimbas archipelago in the Cabo Delgado region.

  • Visiting Ibo Island (there is also a festival here each June which is great fun that celebrates music and culture. Noisy but fun!).

  • A stay at a luxury, boutique lodge where children can learn to snorkel - This can always be scheduled for after the dhow luxury safari.

  • Canoe and luxury camping safaris in Niassa – northern Mozambique – for older children.

  • Close to southern Tanzania one can undertake a luxury bespoke safari, and there are also direct flights from Nairobi and Johannesburg.

  • A beautiful private villa – just perfect for families, in southern Mozambique, which combines well with South Africa. The house comes complete with full staff and lots of water sports and activities.

‘Greetings. this has turned out to be a paradise in so many ways....so a big thank you from us.

Wonderful support from your company over here....we were met at the airport (with flowers!!!!!) and introduced to our personal guide who is fabulous. Can't get over the attention to detail ....cool flannels, chilled water, fresh juice on arrival, bag full of thoughtful goodies for our trip, wonderful rooms with bathrooms bigger than our bedroom at home(!) and we were upgraded to a suite and as I write we are listening to tropical birdsong as we look out over the lagoon from our balcony. Wow!!!!!

I could go on but I'll spare you.

Thanks a million

Judy and Mike’
